Review: La Kinky Beat - One more Time – with listening examples!

Dieser Beitrag ist auch in deutsch verfügbar (empfohlen).

Last year La Kinky Beat was the big surprise for me and even until now the CD has a special state in my CD stand. When friends notice that I'm listening to that album they often say “You listen to such a music?”. And somehow I'm still suprised, too.
But, what's so special about the music from that spanish band? After reading this review this question should be answered.

One of the greatest points that speak for La Kinky Beat, is the fact, that this music isn't easy to categorize. Usually I say it's a mix of Reggae, Ska, Rock and a little bit of Punk. Not easy to imagine, isn't it? That's why I'm happy, that the band gave me permission to bring some sound examples with this review, too.

The band consists of a core of four people and the rest seems to be “half-guest musicians”. But you should especially pay attention to the vocal section of La Kinky Beat: Female Lead Singer Matahary and singer/rapper Rudeman (one of the non-core-members, according to the booklet) have both a unmistakable voice with a lot of power.
Except of the fact, that the group inlcudes a percussionist, too, there's nothing special left. But, when the folks are starting to rock on stage (no matter in which cast), no one's gonna stand still. They just rock and the audiences just dances/jumps around.

“One more time” is the second long player of the musicians from Barcelona. In difference to the freely available concert, you can download from their website, the studio recordings sounds very different, more electronical. After seeing the band live first (at the Bardentreffen 2006) and then get known of the live concert from their website and then listening to the CD, I had to accustom myself to the recordings a little bit. But after some time I had no problem with it.

The songs:

  1. Minimal: The opener is one of the “average group” of that album. But that's not meant in a negative way, because the album has no real “problem songs”. But for all that, the song sounds live much better. Overall it shows the direction of the album and brings you into the correct mood, for the rest of it.

  2. Give me is then the real starter. plausible but not monotonous melodies an rythms and the first appearance of “singer” Rudeman show the common strengths of the band. Unfortunatelly the songs ends already after 2.25 minutes. That's typical for all songs on that album, because all tracks are quite short.

  3. Monster is one of the best songs, that La Kinky Beat wrote until this album. The verse rocks with a cool duet between the both songers, which takes turns every second line. The refrain is extremely intuitive and the bridge is preparing for a sustaining highlight. Everything is right here and even months later the song is still enthusing me. Example of “Monster” (Ogg Vorbis format, 466 KiB)

  4. Chronic Steady is responsible for the first break. It's a slowdown that is perfect for warm sommer evenings. In the prechorus the waves at the beach are already implyed and the part after the first refrain has some nice percussion effects.

  5. This short rest is going to be replaced from the next highlight immediately. Black Panther is starting quite slow, but both, the chorus and the following guitarpart, and the short performance of the “Rudeman” are bringing it up. After one repeating the panther has passed the finish line… Example of “Black Panther” (Ogg Vorbis format, 478 KiB)

  6. …but with Motor Psycho it's going on in a similar way and the speed is raised again a little bit. For once is the part after the first chorus the true highlight, even if it's only driven by a simple but effective guitar part. That's something La Kinky Beat should do more often in the future: More guitars! Example of “Motor Psycho” (Ogg Vorbis format, 492 KiB)

  7. In the half time the first low point and the worst song of the album is played: Eternity. It's the slowest track of the album. For me this kind of songs is unsuitable for La Kinky Beat and I think it's a pity, that the young bands in these days still think, that they need a mock-ballad on an album.

  8. Dejar de Pensar is following and it's a mid tempo song, and that's okay. Especially the cool Keyboard-/Synthesizer-work is really good.

  9. Before the big final begins, the album is holding “Vaffanculo” ready. From a qualitative point of view it's playing in the same area as the opener did. So, there's nothing special here.

  10. Fight is the beginning of the big ending and it prepares the hearer for the last highlights. But the song itself is already very good and it has some capable sing-along parts, too. A clear commendation.

  11. My absolute favorite song of La Kinky Beat is Big Drummer. There's no sing along part, no, the whole song is one! The lyrics are quite simple and the beat is easy to listen. The chorus increases the tempo and the rest of the melody is a nice guitar part. Unfortunately the song ends after not even three minutes and I'm sorry to say, that the song is live just half so good. But who has the band really live in the car? (Smiley: wink) Example of “Big Drummer” (Ogg Vorbis format, 475 KiB)

  12. Rebel Smile is playing in the same league like the previous track does. It has likewise a distinctive verse, a melodic prechorus (this time the keyboard is responsible for the melody), as well as a good refrain. There's even a videoclip to this song.

  13. Mas De Lo Mismo brings everything a little bit down and one could nearly thing, that the album has a calm ending. But in the ending, the song is turning on and there's a exciting hidden track, too. Especially the changing male voice part is great and the dark voice at the beginning is perfectly integrated. The other stuff at the beginning is chilling and bruits a nice on the road, again mood.

Finally I could only say, that these six spanish people brought a very good album on a disc, that's even able to inspire people who usualy jump aside when they're confronted with reaggae or ska.

There's nothing more to say, the listening examples speak for themselfs.
Final rating: 4 of 5 points.

Did you know that, if you play a Windows 2000 CD backwards, you will hear the voice of Satan?
That's nothing!
If you play it forward, it will install Windows 2000!!!
