“Wing Commander — Freedom Flight” by Mercedes Lackey and Ellen Guon

Dieser Beitrag ist auch in deutsch verfügbar (empfohlen).

The Wing Commander series was one of the most popular and successful computer game series in the 90ies. And it was one of the less, that had even merchandising and other articles. There's was a novell series, too, and the first volume “Freedom Flight” is the topic of this review.

The book was written by two fitting authors: Mercedes Lacke has some experience in the fantasy- and SciFi-genre and Ellen Guon was a game designer once. So, there are good premises. Let's have a deeper look to the result.

The Confederation conducts negotations with the bird like people from Firekka. The Austin and the Tiger's Claw are currently in the system, but the standard patrols recognize some Kilrathi activities and after some time more and more Kilrathi ships appear on the radar systems. Why have the Kilrathi so much interest in such an unimportant system? And why saw the confederation the enemy so late? There's not much hope, until one of the enemy ships is changing fronts…

Review

The story plays in the earlier Wing Commander universe, before Kilrah felt. Luckily they decided against a complete spin-off, so the reader will get the Wing Commander feeling very quick, by reading about well known characters. It's mainly about Captain Ian “Hunter” St. John, but you'll meet some old friends, too, like “Spirit”, “Maverick“ (Blair), “Paladin” (Taggart) and of course “Maniac” (Marshall).

The obligatory flying scenes are included, too, and though I only know two of the later Wing Commander adventures, I really identified some of the terms that are only known in the Wing Commander universe. So, the integration in the computer game series was well done, as far as I can say.

The plot is not one of the best, but it's okay. I think for the real fan the side plots are more important and these are done quite good.

Rating

I think, this time it's simple: I only have to answer three questions to come to a rating:

  1. Does the book fit into the Wing Commander universe? - Yes.
  2. If you would take out the Wing Commander bonus, would the book be more than just an average SciFi-novell? - No.
  3. Will I read another volume of this series? - Yep, sometime.

That results into a final rating of 2.5 of 5 points.

Als Spiel war WC ja erste Sahne, aber die Story war schon immer hanebüchen. Wie die aus so was immer noch Handlung für ganze Bücher rausquetschen, ist schon bewundernswert. Als nächstes folgt dann "Pitfall - The Movie".
